Be Personally Prepared

Being prepared is everyone's responsibility. Taking a few minutes to prepare a survival kit will ensure your family's well-being in the event of a disaster. You must be prepared to be self sufficient for 72 hours or more until professional help can arrive. It is very important to include all family members in your survival plans and to plan for emergencies occurring at work, school or in your vehicle.

Disaster can strike without warning at anytime. All areas of North America are prone to some type of natural disaster. Whether it's a blizzard, an earthquake, tornado or a flash flood, when it comes to survival planning, there is no such thing as being too prepared or having too much information or having too many resources working together for the safety and well-being of the community. Be sure you and your family are prepared to assist by not becoming a burden on the resources of your community.

Emergency preparedness is vital in every walk of life and at every level of the community such as individual, home, school, workplace and all levels of government. Take some time to put a plan together, do it one week at a time so you do not overburden yourself. Remember when a disaster happens you are on your own, so spending a little time and effort will benefit you and your family in the long run. It is also important to remember to update your survival plan every six months to ensure your gear and equiptment are up to date and viable.

It is advisable to receive some form of first aid training. Check your local yellow pages for the location of a St. John's Ambulance station or the local chapter of the Red Cross for more information.
